This week we are taking on another single word…Surrender. When we surrender our lives to Jesus, we give up our wants, desires and plans. We renounce our old self-centered life and take on the life of Jesus loving and serving others. We relinquish our future to the God of the Universe the Great I Am. What does a surrendered life look like? Have you really surrendered your life? What do you have to surrender?
I believe, the younger you are the more you will have to surrender. Allowing God to guide and lead you is not something most people understand today, especially our young people. We make our plans, go to school and reach out to achieve those goals. Those who do ask for God’s help, have faith God is in support of their plans.
The fact is God puts many of our wants, desires and plans into our hearts because that is His plan for us. When you look at your plans, are they others centered? Or are they self-centered and self-focused? This is one of the ways you can tell if God approves. Again, serving God and serving others should be part of our surrendered life. Even your occupation should be something you can find fulfillment in, provide for your future, and do for the glory of God our Father.
We make many decisions in our life. How many have you actually taken to God? How many times have your asked for His direction? How do you know when He is guiding and directing you? Have you ever slammed up against a closed-door? What was your reaction? What happens, when everything changes and nothing goes as you plan? Do you get angry? At God? At yourself? At others? Do you turn to God and ask Him to make His path clear? Are you able to make changes without qualms?
I know I am asking lots of questions, but you need to consider each one. We don’t know when things will turn for the worse. Until that time, we need to prepare our hearts and minds, but life does go on. I encourage you to seek God when making plans. We need teachers, farmers, doctors, mechanics, welders and many other important occupations. It’s essential we have skilled people when the time comes. Pursue your dreams and desires, but be ready to change directions when the times change.
James 4:13-15 (GW) 13 Pay attention to this! You’re saying, “Today or tomorrow we will go into some city, stay there a year, conduct business, and make money.” 14 You don’t know what will happen tomorrow. What is life? You are a mist that is seen for a moment and then disappears. 15 Instead, you should say, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and carry out our plans.”
