Jesus is the Vine. We are the branches.
Have you ever thought about what it means to be the branches on the vine of Jesus? Picture a grape-vine. It has a sturdy trunk and from that trunk branches grow. These branches are long, covered with leaves, and clumps of grapes.
Grapes need a support system. The usual method is posts on each end with wire strung between. The vining branches run along the wire and the heavy ripe grapes are held up off the ground. They need pruning in the late fall or early winter. Additional thinning is needed in the summer.
I’m explaining this because physical reality reflects spiritual truth. Father God is Jesus’s support system. He receives his power and authority from His Father in Heaven. Jesus is our sturdy trunk, our life and strength grows out of Him to bear good fruit. In addition, we receive additional support from the Holy Spirit.
One of the most difficult parts of our spiritual life is the pruning in order to produce goof fruit. We all have dead things in our life that hold us back from doing God’s work in our lives. Pruning snips off those unproductive things and transfers the strength to the rest of the branch. Thinning also cuts out excess fruit, good things you do that take focus off what you really need to be doing. Again this gives the nutrients to the most important areas of your life and ministry. This might be letting go of a position or responsibility because it spreads you too thin or takes time from God time…prayer and Bible reading, and family time. Remember your spouse comes first after God, followed by children/family.
Sweet ripe fruit is the goal of any farmer including Father God. He must water Jesus Christ with his love, feed his plants – fertilize with His Word-Bible, and cultivate the ground using The Holy Spirit, then prune out the dead wood. All are necessary for a good crop. Every Believer will experience each over time in order to successfully do Father God’s work. You remove one, and just as a plant would suffer, Christians suffer too.
This is something to ponder, to meditate upon. Is your spiritual life lush and filled with life? Is there fruit in your life? Are you trying to do too much or not enough? It is important to be strong in your faith and walk. As days become dark and filled with evil, you will need to draw upon the strength from the roots of our Lord and Savior Jesus in order to stay focused and on target.
John 15:1-5 (AMP)
1 I AM the True Vine, and My Father is the Vinedresser.
2 Any branch in Me that does not bear fruit [that stops bearing] He cuts away (trims off, takes away); and He cleanses and repeatedly prunes every branch that continues to bear fruit, to make it bear more and richer and more excellent fruit.
3 You are cleansed and pruned already, because of the word which I have given you [the teachings I have discussed with you].
4 Dwell in Me, and I will dwell in you. [Live in Me, and I will live in you.] Just as no branch can bear fruit of itself without abiding in (being vitally united to) the vine, neither can you bear fruit unless you abide in Me.
5 I am the Vine; you are the branches. Whoever lives in Me and I in him bears much (abundant) fruit. However, apart from Me [cut off from vital union with Me] you can do nothing.
