General definitions of religion, along with many people lump all faiths of the world into the same basket. One can understand the lack of understanding because religions in general have many things in common. Religions have similarities to the Christian faith. They have a central figure of worship, laws or rules, a code of ethics and morals, and a way to reach heaven after death. The foundation of most religions is a method for a person to earn his or her way to the after life. What the world doesn’t understand and the definition neglects to reveal is: Christianity is a relationship not a religion.
The main difference between the religions of the world and Christianity is Jesus, the son of God. We do not worship a dead person, stone idol, or the created (nature). We worship the Creator of heaven and earth, the ruler of all, the Great I AM. Father God sent his only son to teach us his ways, then Jesus freely took our sins, died in our place, and rose again. He now sits at Father God’s right hand and intercedes on our behalf.
When a person chooses to believe in Jesus and accept him as Savior, the Holy Spirit indwells the heart of the believer, and is adopted into Father God’s family. A relationship develops over time between Jesus and his followers. Jesus wants a relationship with each of us. Our prayers are heard and He works on our behalf. This does not mean we get everything we ask for, but we know Jesus loves us and will do what’s best for each of us.
We follow the 10 Commandments, but Jesus added to the list. The Bible says in:
Matthew 22:36-40 (NKJV)
36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” 37 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”
We cannot earn our way into Heaven. Eternal life is a promise from God.
As believers, we must understand Jesus is alive. He is our Savior and King. More important, Jesus is our friend and confidant. He will never leave or forsake us. We can depend on him now and forever. As dark days approach, it’s imperative we hold fast to this truth.
